A report last year found that in Ireland, back pain was found to be the most commonly reported chronic condition with one in five respondents to a survey saying they have it.

While a multitude of different reasons could be behind it, ranging from diet factors to deeper bone issues, one research team is aiming to stop the problem at its source with a new hydrogel.

One such researcher is Dr Isma Liza Mohd Isa at the Cúram medical device research centre at NUI Galway.
